Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Rice University
Doerr Institute for New Leaders
Post-doctoral Position

The Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow beginning August 1, 2018.

Position Description: The postdoctoral research fellow will report to Ryan Brown, PhD, the Managing Director for Measurement, to help the Institute expand and enhance its measurement systems. The Institute takes an evidence-based approach to all of its initiatives, and as we expand our number of programs and developmental opportunities for students, we need to expand our measurement capabilities as well. A successful candidate will be expected to spend the majority of his or her time working directly on measurement-related projects, with additional time spent assisting with related Institute objectives. The full-time position is for 12 months with the strong possibility of a 12-month extension. We will consider applicants from any area within the social sciences, although preference will be given to students within I/O Psychology, Social Psychology, Personality Psychology, Behavioral Economics, or related fields.

Required and Desired Skills and Experiences: Candidates must have experience measuring outcomes at the level of the individual and managing large data sets. A record of publication in academic social science journals is required. In addition, it is desirable for candidates to have experience directing creative and novel measurement projects to capture social/interpersonal competencies and abilities (e.g., empathy, communication, self-awareness, decision-making, assertiveness). Experience running assessment centers is very desirable. Strong statistical skills are required for this position, as are strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to use SPSS and Qualtrics software for gathering and analyzing data is required, as is the ability to design and analyze data from experimental and quasi-experimental studies to test complex interventions with human beings. Teaching and training experience is also very desirable. The postdoctoral research fellow will be expected to supervise both graduate and undergraduate research assistants in the service of the Institute’s mission.

About the Doerr Institute: The Doerr Institute for New Leaders was established in 2015 by Rice alums Ann and John Doerr with a mission to enhance the leadership capacity of Rice students across the entire university. Since that time, the Institute has worked with over 1000 Rice undergraduate and graduate students to help them grow in their leadership abilities. On our current trajectory, we expect to have worked with approximately 30% of the undergraduate student body within the next two years and to have helped shape the broader university culture around how we develop students as leaders.

About Rice: Rice University is a comprehensive research university located in Houston, Texas, the nation’s fourth-largest and most diverse city. With approximately 3900 undergraduates and 2800 graduate students, Rice combines the intimacy of a small college with the influence of an R1 research institution.
