Living in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a diverse, bustling, and cosmopolitan city. It is the
world’s largest offshore financial center after Luxembourg, and the premier
destination for corporate and household wealth in Asia. Hong Kong's longevity is among the highest
in the world.
There are tons of outdoor activities - nearly half the land is devoted
to country parks, and there are dozens of beaches and islands. Hiking is the
favorite national pastime. Hong Kong is also big on art, music, and theater.
Although housing is tight, it's no different from other major
metropolitan areas, such as New York City and London. The overall cost of
living is 33% cheaper than in New York City, and there are many
fun travel opportunities nearby (e.g., in South East Asia and the Chinese
mainland).
The salary is competitive and the taxes are negligible (less than 2% of
the postdoc income). There is no sales tax, VAT, or GST. The Hong Kong dollar
is pegged to the US dollar.
